These beautiful and very useful shopping baskets are made by hand by female weavers in Bolgatanga, Northern Ghana. The women handle their own finances and so are treated fairly.

The grasses used to weave these items grow wild and are gathered, prepared and naturally dyed by members of the group, ready to be woven into a unique, biodegradable piece.

The baskets are about 10″ deep and 16″ end to end. The handles are big enough to sit on the shoulder; they are bound with cow hide to make them more comfortable to hold. They arrive from Ghana slightly misshapen because they are squashed tightly together, but are easy to reshape, following the enclosed  instructions.

You can, of course, use these baskets for shopping, but also to hold craft projects, craft materials, blankets and all manner of things.
